10 November Tussles Worth Watching

As 2009 hits the home stretch, the stars come out. The world’s best fighters, even those who have remained relatively quiet, remember awards, titles, fame and fortune are up for grabs at the end of the year. More than a dozen athletes who are recognized as top 10 fighters in their respective weight classes — and even a couple of pound-for-pound kings — will ply their trades in November. Still, there are some unusual cases of hardship this month.

At any other time, fights involving heavy hitters like former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin, reigning Strikeforce light heavyweight titleholder Gegard Mousasi and Takeshi Inoue might have been guaranteed a spot in the top 10. Not this time.

As always, the list does not necessarily focus on the major bouts you already know to watch, but rather on fights from all over the planet that are worth seeing.

9. Wander Braga vs. Alberto Crane
Called Out MMA 2, Nov. 14 — Ontario, Calif.

A handful of fighters were so far ahead of their time that they were successful during the “dark ages” of MMA but unable to reap the success they deserve. Frank Shamrock is one of them; Braga is another. This Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt ruled the mid 1990s with an iron hand in Brazil and returned from a five-year break to succeed inside the World Extreme Cagefighting and King of the Cage promotions in 2003-04. After another five-year hiatus, he returned this summer and lost for the first time as a professional mixed martial artist. Braga will try to eliminate the mistakes he made in his defeat to Gabe Ruediger, as he takes on Crane, another UFC veteran.

With the addition of WEC newcomer Karen Darabedyan (8-1 MMA, 0-0 WEC), the fight card for next month’s WEC 44 event is now complete.

WEC officials today announced the full fight card for the Nov. 18 event, which features a main event between WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown and challenger Jose Aldo.

The show takes place at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, and the night’s four-fight main card airs on Versus.

“WEC continually delivers some of the best fights in the business,” WEC General Manager Reed Harris stated. “With this event taking place the same week as UFC 106, we guarantee that this will be one of the best fight weeks in the history of the sport.”

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported earlier today, Anthony Pettis was recently forced out of his lightweight bout with Rob McCullough (17-5 MMA, 8-3 WEC). WEC officials weren’t immediately sure who would take the vacant spot on the night’s televised card, though Darabedyan ultimately got the call to face the former WEC lightweight champion.

Darabedyan, a training partner of WEC 44 co-headliner Manny Gamburyan, is a Los Angeles-based fighter who’s racked up an 8-1 professional record during his three-year pro career. Half of his victories have come via stoppage, and his lone loss came to former UFC fighter Koji Oishi via decision.

Jay Silva from Called Out MMA to the UFC

PRESS RELEASE) — On November 14th Called Out MMA sets out to prove that it is not a promotion that likes to rest on past accomplishments. With a new production schedule and another stacked fight card, the promotion’s November 14th event promises to be the best Called Out MMA event to date.

The night’s card features eleven bouts. Highlighting the card is a middleweight matchup between UFC “The Ultimate Fighter” coach Hector “Sick Dog” Ramirez (8-3-1) and Bret Bergmark (5-1-1).

November 14th will mark Team Rampage assistant coach Hector “Sick Dog” Ramirez’s returns to the cage after a year long layoff. In his first bout after season 10 of “The Ultimate Fighter” Ramirez faces three time WEC veteran Bret Bergmark (5-1-1).

In the co-main event Bao Quach (17-9-1) squares off against Georgi Karakhanyan (12-1). Quach, a highly sought after mixed martial arts veteran, has had the opportunity to exhibit his talent with several top MMA promotions including EliteXC, Affliction and Strike Force. For Karakhanyan, who carries only one blemish on an otherwise stellar record, Quach will undoubtedly be his toughest challenge thus far.

Also, Wander Braga (16-1) returns to the cage seeking redemption after having suffered the first loss of his career at the hands of Gabe Ruediger. Braga has made it clear that he is hungrier now than ever, and is ready to prove that he is still a force to be reckoned with. However, Braga faces no easy task as his opponent at Called Out Fights II is UFC veteran Alberto Crane (12-4).
